In this program, you’ll focus on reading for academic purposes, critical writing, and essential speaking and listening skills for successful participation in the American university classroom. Teaching methods, assignments, and assessment strategies are often quite different in the United States and this program will give you the tools you need for success.
As an AEP student, you will participate in essential social and cultural immersion experiences to help you become comfortable with living and actively participating in U.S. campus and community environments.
We use the communicative approach and the direct method in all of our English classes. This means that teachers and students speak only English in the classroom, and translation is strongly discouraged. Thus students are required to think and communicate in English at all times. You’ll find yourself speaking English from the very first day of class.
1 | We don’t translate in class so that you will learn quickly.
There is never any translation in the classroom and this helps students to think and speak in English. All students sign the “English-only policy,” which is a contract that states you will speak only in English during your classes.
2| We rotate teachers so you learn to understand any native speaker.
Teacher rotation exposes you to many types of speakers and ensures that you understand the language in a variety of situations. Teacher rotation also keeps class fresh and interesting.
3| We emphasize communication so you’ll feel confident speaking.
The BridgeEnglish methodology focuses on speaking and listening, so that you can quickly improve your conversational skills. Grammar, reading, and writing are also important, and we teach those skills through a practical and communicative approach without being tedious, boring, or repetitive. You will speak and understand the English language, not just analyze it. We believe that the key to learning English is communication.
4| We offer practice lectures to prepare you for a university.
Higher-level classes may include some lectures to give students additional listening and note-taking practice. These are key skills for successful university study, where the instruction is delivered in English.
5| Homework assignments allow you to practice what you’ve learned.
Homework is used to preview or review materials presented in lessons, as reinforcement of learned concepts, and to provide practice of the educational objectives of the program.
6| Assessments help you to keep track of your progress.
Ongoing assessments of your progress are completed every 4 weeks, so you’ll know exactly how much your English is improving. Weekly tests and quizzes help you realize areas in English where you may need extra practice or additional tutoring with a private instructor.
