How is BridgeEnglish different from other schools?

We care about our students! You will receive personal attention from your teachers, advisors, and all members of the staff. We will work closely with you to ensure that you are learning what you need and having the experience in the U.S. that you expected.

In the
General English Program (GEP), people who need to communicate in English come to us because we offer the best conversational approach in small, dynamic classes. In the Academic English Program (AEP), we offer a solid traditional approach to learning English emphasizing all the skills students need to succeed in an American university. For more information, please visit Why BridgeEnglish.
How do I know my language level?

BridgeEnglish students are tested before or upon arrival and every four weeks in your program. The initial test is the BridgeEnglish Placement Test (BLT) and the final test is the University of Michigan Placement Test (UMPT). These tests are comprised of four parts: listening, grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. You will receive a computer printout of your results.

Your speaking is evaluated in your first meeting with your advisor who will go over the test results and confirm whether your speaking is at the same level as the rest of your language skills. Students in our Full Immersion Program and Private-Group Combo Program will receive a more formal Test of Spoken English (TSE) that is recorded. The TSE is administered both at the beginning and at the conclusion of the student’s program. For more information, please see Language Levels.
How much progress can I make in one four-week term?

This question varies significantly by person and program but there are some factors we can consider to help you set a goal. In a four-week Full Immersion Program or Private-Group Combo Program, many students will experience an improvement of a full level. In the Small-Group Program, students will often see an improvement of 5 to 10 points on the BridgeEnglish Placement Test or University of Michigan Placement Test. In general, people who speak German or Latin languages tend to learn English faster than others.

The following steps can help all students increase their rate of improvement:

Staying with an American host family and communicating with them frequently.

Making a commitment to speak English only both in and outside of the school.

Participating actively in your class and doing your homework

Participating in activities outside of school using English.

Staying away from long-distance communication where you spend hours each day responding to e-mails and receiving phone calls in your native language from your company, family, or friends.

How do I know that I'm on track to achieving my goals?

Make regular appointments to speak with your advisor! He or she is responsible for your progress and is very interested in identifying where you should be at any point in your study program. Your advisor can help with any problems or concerns you may be experiencing. For more information, please visit Academic Advising.
Can I take the IELTS, iBTOEFL, or other English tests at BridgeEnglish?

Yes! BridgeEnglish is an official testing center for the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication). The IELTS, like the iBTOEFL (Internet-Based TOEFL), is used for admission to colleges and universities, as well as for employment and immigration purposes. The TOEIC is used to show your level in English especially for employers, companies, and organizations that require individuals to speak English.

You can take the iBTOEFL at the testing center on the Auraria Campus in nearby downtown Denver. Your advisor will be happy to help you make an appointment to take the test there.
How much do school activities cost?

Activity prices generally range from $40-$60, depending on the type of activity and number of students who sign up. BridgeEnglish offers free happy hours and movie nights, along with free walking tours of downtown every month. To learn more about our activities, please visit Activities & Excursions.
Do you have test preparation classes?

Yes, we have iBTOEFL (Internet-Based TOEFL), GRE (Graduate Record Examination), and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) preparation classes. These group test preparation classes require a minimum of two people before they can start. We can also do any kind of test preparation in private classes.
Why don't you have a specific grammar class in the General English Program?

All of our conversation classes use textbooks where grammar is integrated into the language you are studying in class at the moment. Therefore, grammar at BridgeEnglish is taught in the context of communication. We do not emphasize grammar as a separate subject because students most often come here to develop their conversational skills—something that is more difficult to do in your own country. It is easy to find an English grammar class or book back home that emphasizes grammar theory but not speaking.

The Academic English Program does have a specific grammar class since it’s part of the writing program. If grammar is especially difficult for you, you can focus on this in a private class.
How far will my host family be from the school?

All BridgeEnglish host families are within a 45-minute bus ride from the school. Some are significantly closer. To learn more about our host families, please visit Accommodations.
What type of amenities do the hotels have?

The four-star hotels have swimming pools, laundry facilities, restaurants, and shuttle service. You’ll also have free access to local gyms in the area. Apart-style hotels are equipped with a small kitchenette and study area. To learn more about our hotel lodging options, please visit Accommodations.
